for every two incredible mary balogh books I read, there has to be one where a shitty parent is forgiven. (first half was good, I just want her to punch her dad)

Emma is starting Bringing Down the Duke (A League of Extraordinary Women, #1)
currently annoyed by: references to Crime and Punishment being translated into English in 1879 (it was 1885) and a pedantic character saying "Et tu, Brutus?" instead of *the actual line from the play* "et tu, Brute" which sounds better and preserves the vocative case

Sorry, the only reason I think this wasn’t written by AI is the year it was published. It feels like you fed romance dialogue through a machine.

Or perhaps it is just George has spent proper time looking at this one painting and that every single experience of looking at something would be this good if she devoted time to everything she looked at.

The HGH is underdeveloped in this early Dare, but we are still getting a IIBJ (independently invented blow job). Classic Dare!

I feel crazy. This book is not good. You're telling me an 18th century woman is grossed out by the concept of touching a raw egg? She worked as servant as a child and acts like cooking anything is so foreign to her. This is my current breaking point, but I'm going to try and finish because the conception of sex work is so bad and hollow that I want to scream about it and I want to scream accurately.

also the reason the vicar's position is called a "living" is because it is effectively a life estate. a new Duke could not take it away from him!

unclear why I am reading this and also unclear why Perry doesn't try to get a job! why would an heiress want to marry an POOR illegitimate son of a Duke who is also kind of a dick. he is the perfect candidate for a job! get a job!

everyone's always touting Georgette Heyer's historical accuracy as a virtue, but nobody's ever talking about how her prose makes me want to claw my eyes out
