I’m enjoying the idea for the book so far.

I do feel that in creating the character Shabana the author has been lazy, if not ignorant in using a stereotypical version of an Indian woman for this character. India, arranged marriage, violent husband, she speaks no English and has to use interpreters.

I don’t usually like books that jump back and forth between different times, but I’m managing to keep up so far.

Thought provoking. Some interesting info about cases of racial discrimination and how those incidents have been dealt with (or not) historically. Obviously the Stephen Lawrence murder was one I was well aware of but there were other stories that I had never read about.

Starting to feel like I’ve read this book before. I enjoyed the book back then and learnt a bit more about how slavery worked and in particular, that black people were also slave owners. I will continue with this book.

Gripped by this story so far. I had a feeling that it would emerge that Walter started to abuse Roxy when she was 15 and she was jealous that Erin wasn’t receiving the same treatment so she lashed out at Erin. But when she realised that it wouldn’t do her any good taking it out on Erin she ran away. Not quite sure what the deal is with Erin only eating baby food though. Hmm.
