I also find it almost offensive how hung up people are about what an unlikeable character Deirdre is. Check your privilege. If you're able-bodied enough not to have to make the decisions Deirdre does about her physical cleanliness and sanitation, then good for you. If you're able to walk to the bathroom and use the toilet or take a shower with hot running water, great. Be grateful.

I find it strange that people are referring to this book as dystopian. The situation in Cape Town (and much of South Africa) is not too far removed from the scenes depicted here. Notably, there was a 5 year water shortage from 2015-2020 in which the city limped towards "day zero" when they would run out of water. Also, many communities already depend on water trucks for their water. This is not a future nightmare

Just realised I'm reading / listening to two post-apocalyptic / dystopian novels simultaneously. Oh well. At least they are slightly different-
Parable of the Sower
is more middle-of-the-apocalypse and
Toxxic
features aspects of an apocalypse but the society is largely dystopian post-apocalypse

I don't know what's going on with me at the moment but it seems the only books keeping my interest are those set in South Africa or Vietnam.

This book appears to be as divisive af and I am starting to see why. I'm enjoying it but noting the flaws.
Girls - nobody owes you their baby or child loss story. It's not lying, it's not even lying by omission. It's none of your business.

Noting this here, in case I ever forget again, that I LOVE Galgut's writing.

The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida
Okay, I'm putting this book on hold again. The audiobook is too confusing but I think I've found my rhythm with it so I'm going to try reading the print version again.

This book is so well written, but perhaps should have been marketed as a set of four novellas. I'm so invested in the story and dying to know how it ends but also keen to get onto the other audiobooks on TBR list

I realised this book would take me months to read but I really didn't want to give up on it. Have switched to the audiobook and the narrator is brilliant.

The Maze Cutter (The Maze Cutter #1)
It's been 73 years since the events in the Maze Runner series and approximately 73 years since I began this book and I'm only 52% through. I love this world and I should love the scenes in fallen, overgrown neighbourhoods but it's boring and a chore to read

I'm in the minority of people that like the new Goodreads update - I assume that's because I have middle-aged eyes that suddenly need everything to be magnified.
However, GR's algorithm has gone completely wrong since they've started the beta. Their recommendations are just no use at all.
Not saying I'm leaving but am trying StoryGraph as I believe their recommendations are on point.

I feel I need a better idea of when the Half Bad Netflix series is releasing so I can time my re-read properly

Damn. I'm at the 'should I cut work and read this book instead' stage of this book.

The Revolution of Birdie Randolph was one of my most-beloved, comfort reads of last year so I'm giving this one a try to attempt to kick start my reading brain again. I'm enjoying it so far

I think the pandemic finally broke my brain and I've fallen out of love with reading and listening to books. I'm just not enjoying anything anymore. Maybe it's time to change things up completely? I've been reading (and reviewing) primarily YA for 15 years. Maybe it's time to focus on just non-fiction and comics for a while? Something different to reboot my brain. Anyone else struggling?

I've wanted to read this since the minute I first heard about it and just discovered the audiobook is on Spotify. Very convenient!

I wanted to love this but I didn't. I kept switching between the audiobook and my kindle copy because it was just taking so long to get through. I might try re-read this book again because I feel like I've not been able to do it justice

I realised too late that this book isn't YA but by then I was sucked in and couldn't stop reading
