I'm struggling to stay focused but this book seems really interesting and I'm certain the story will pick up the further into it i get

I hate that I'm already on page 17 💀 Reading this too fast. His Dark Materials wouldn't fit in my bag and I've been wanting to reread Naruto and try to actually finish the series this time, so I packed what I could and that was just the first two volumes 😭

Found that the person that recommended Eleanor Oliphant to me also recommended the first of this trilogy, which I happen to already own, so I decided to read this as I abandoned the other recommendation. It's intriguing so far!

It just hit me why I'm struggling to read this despite it being quite mysterious and drip-feeding intriguing puzzle pieces: for large gaps between bits that seem like something's happening, it's a lore dump. I like a good lore dump, love reading d&d lore books, but it's a "time and place" thing for me personally, and it feels like it's making everything stand still. It unfortunately gets to be a little dull.

How am I already near the end!! 😭

The way Kell left Lila reminds me of that bit with the chopsticks in Shanghai Noon 😂

Really, really enjoying this so far—my cat chose well when he knocked this off my shelf this morning! 🤣

Although I still have my reading challenge from last year to finish, and several unfinished books and series, this morning Larry (my cat) woke me by pulling a book off my 'to-read' shelf, which seemed pretty significant since he's never done that before—it was like he was choosing my next book for me, and I think it was a pretty good choice!

I get that some teenagers obsess over their crushes, I remember being a bit like that myself, but MY GOD does she go on and on whining about Jesse in this one!

"Maybe now he'd start to realise how stupid he'd been" (she says about Jesse)—Meanwhile I'm in agreement with her mum, thinking she's the stupid one!

& I'm not "team Paul" either. He's gross, and she should have never gone to his house, but I get why she did

I don't remember what happened with Suze and this Paul guy 😂 Might have to revisit the previous volume!

"Was that what I'd seen? A haunted soul too ashamed to live and too scared to die?" Sometimes I forget how heavy this children book series can be.

Her descriptions of her high school reminds me a lot of how I'd describe my secondary school, even down to there being an overpass bridge over a road connecting two sides (only the one my school had connected the fields for P.E. with the rest of the school), science and IT was also in a separate "annexe" building as well. If my secondary school housed dark forces, I wouldn't be surprised. It was dreary enough for it.

'"I'm feeling some sweet energy in the house tonight," he kept saying. "You Park Hall people must have /serious/ auras. Yeah man, there's enough lies and illusion in this world, but you guys are still keeping it real." She did it, she dropped the title of the book in the book!

Needed a break from my reading challenge, so I went back to rereading (and hopefully finishing) childhood reads, starting with this one.

Only brought manga to read on the train. This is by the same author that wrote a series I really like called "Like the Beast," (I think?) which is one of the first BL manga I read that had a healthy balanced gay relationship (the bar for BL is really at rock bottom, lol!), so I hope that's also the case in this one—I think I have read it before but that was like 10 years ago, so I can't comment on that yet.

I try my best to read a chapter each time I sit down to read this, but the chapters are pretty long and I find myself zoning out partway through, so I've been allowing myself to stop when there's a break. It's interesting, I just don't find myself struggling to put it down like I do with a good fiction book.

'But the biggest surprise was Charlie Pickles. The scowly subeditor took me into his bony arms and actually hugged me, saying, "Ahm goon' to miss thee, Stewart." It was a moment that I can characterise as... intimate.' 🤣🤣🤣

Whenever I read older books, and books such as this one remembering stuff from a long time ago, there are moments such as Charlie's reaction to 'intimate' that reminds me that pearl clutching isn't an entirely new thing. Did Charlie understand the word 'intimate'? 🤣

Needed a break from non-fiction for a bit, I'm finding (as always) I can only read so much before I crave fiction again.
