So Beloved is most likely a sort of reincarnation of Sethe's baby. Does that mean she was in hell or purgatory? The description of it being hot, dark, and her being "small there" makes me wonder. It also explains why Beloved only showed up after the ghost baby was banished.

"'Only God knows what we're made for,' Hualit said. 'Now, have another date. They're good for sour stomachs and self-pity.'"

Woman moment! (I feel so seen and spoken to in a way so subtle and unknown to others and something definitely just broke inside me but no one could hear it shatter except myself)

Sooo I'm already reading like four books and I had four more on hold. I was not prepared for the library to be so quick with getting them to me so, long story short, I have eight books in my possession that I'm going to try to read in three weeks lmao

It's definitely a lot, but I'm so excited. I've been having little reading parties with myself at night :D

Chapter 1 is immediately captivating. I adore the writing style and I'm very interested in a story set in the Spanish golden age.

"It was one thing to beat up a ghost, quite another to throw a helpless coloredgirl out in territory infected by the Klan. Desperately thirsty for black blood, without which it could not live, the dragon swam the Ohio at will."

Lyrical and haunting. This book has given me chills multiple times already.

That's kind of a crazy coincidence that the stranger's name is Beloved. I'm wondering if this is going to be something supernatural.

Completely in love with the "their shadows were holding hands" metaphor. There is an unsteady but sincere tenderness between the three of them that makes me really hope it will all work out.

The way complexities of trauma and unrealistic expectations in relationships are presented is really well done.

Pages 27-28...wow. There is not a book I've ever read that's has me in tears less than 30 pages in. This is some of the most heartbreakingly beautiful literature I've read.

It's been a while since I've found myself speechless about a book. This is so beautifully and hauntingly written so far. I'm so glad to have started reading it.

More than anything, I just feel very sad on behalf of the creation. So far, he seems harmless and Frankenstein is treating him like a pariah. You wanted to reanimate a man from death, now here he is! You were convinced you could do it and you have! Why turn your back to him now and flee in terror?

Everything Shelley writes is pure poetry. There's such a foreboding gloom dripping from each and every word. It's delicious.

The introductory letters are gripping and the writing is beautiful. The atmosphere is so dark and gloomy so far, I love it!

I honestly didn't think it would be Whit alone, so I'm actually surprised. But it makes sense. I'm so happy Cain lived! I was hoping they wouldn't just kill him off like books tend to do :(

I found the ending with Leo in the elevator kind of killed it for me. I thought it was good enough to just wrap it up with his last email. Kind of fumbled it at the end, but it was good otherwise

"Oh, fuck this pandemic. If not for it, you would be here. I would have been your guide. I would have shown you the unimaginable."

Uh hi hello that's horrifying, thanks Leo!

Jesus, Leo's creepy. What's his obsession with "the plague"? He literally rewrote Hannah's manuscript to include it. What gives him the fucking right? I guess this has to be part of his M.O. The knowing that a mask helps you get aways with murder. Perhaps he thinks that this "darkness upon the world" is a gift because it gives him the ability to kill relatively undetected.
