"In ancient time the patriarch Ibrahim came into this valley with Hagar and Ismail, their son. Here, in this waterless wilderness, he abandoned her. She asked him, can this be God's will? He replied, it is. And left, the bastard. From the beginning men used God to justify the unjustifiable. He moves in mysterious ways: men say."

I never do this, but I'm simply not enjoying this one. I'm having a hard time following how characters are connected. There are chapters where I feel like the author's prose is very nice, but for the life of me I don't know what he's talking about. Perhaps I don't follow the cultural references enough... I give up... time to pick a new book.

I'm intrigued but kind of struggling with the writing style. I feel like he has a very fast cadence and I'm not accustomed to reading quite that fast in my head. I spent the first 2 chapters only vaguely aware of what was going on.
