With these shorter books, it's been harder to get to know, and get invested in, the characters. Having already seen Max and Juliet for the first 2 in this series has helped establish them and their dynamic early on.

It is frankly too farfetched that her late husband <spoiler>never once consummated their 5 year marriage</spoiler>. Just ridiculous and too convenient of a background for these historicals where <spoiler>women are expected to be virginal. Insane to shoehorn a widow into that status</spoiler>.
