Afternoon in Linen 4⭐
I understand the girl so much. It is always so embarrassing when the parents do not understand that you cannot drag the child's vulnerabilities out before the other children. Children are vicious creatures.

Elizabeth 3⭐
Kind of sad, but the sadness is so deeply buried, you don't notice it first, concentrating on the surface-level problem and irritations. Honestly, also kind of scary, because the slow and painful death of excitement and hope is scary in a very real, existential way. Having to satisfy yourself with dreams of better places and better people is heart-breaking.

Dorothy and My Grandmother and the Sailors 3⭐
Shirley Jackson keeps being absolutely right, I also react to men like that.

Flower Garden 3⭐
It would be hilarious (if not so sad) that Mrs. MacLane got ostracized because she was nice to a black man, but when she asked if that was the reason, Mrs. Winning actually got indignant about MacLane "blaming" the black man… as if it's not exactly what happened…

Charles 4⭐
Oh, it was so obvious that there is no Charles, but I still enjoyed it. I do sympathize with the mother a lot. I am pretty sure I won't have any children, simply because I would execute my spawn with the quote from Taras Bulba if he turned out like that…

The Renegade 5⭐
The thought process is so painfully familiar, because I also jump through hoops like that every single day. I felt so empathetic towards Mrs. Walpole :(

The Witch 5⭐
The scariest thing is truly just a man that sits next to your child and talks about how he killed his little sister, Shirley Jackson is absolutely right.

My life with R.H. Macy 4 ⭐
This was beautifully written, exactly what I wanted. Tbh, I didn't like the short story which the compilation is named after, because it was too easy to figure out from the very beginning. For this story, I also needed only a page or two to understand, but that didn't affect the hilarious portrayal of work in customer service under a gigantic corporation.
