“The Witch is what Dorothy must overcome to get back home to Kansas.”
aka the thing that the character needs to overcome/face in order to reach the goal is the conflict

“When you work on your opening scene keep these things in mind. You need an event or circumstance.”

literally speechless. a scene is not what i imagined—but now i realized that i actually LOVE scenes and the lack of them is what i call “bad prose” (at least part of it)
now i know what i need to master in my own writing. it feels SO nice to have the language and be able to google the exact thing i need

“A scene is action. A scene happens. It is not a lengthy explanation of what happened. Or what will happen. Or even a big stretch of internal dialogue. It's not wonderfully evocative
description or exposition or backstory.”

js realized my tentative outline doesn’t even have the climax like 🤣
The climax of a book is frequently referred to as a "big black moment" or crisis. The moment at which the character realizes all may be lost. The final moment which determines whether or not
your character will achieve his goal.”
YAH NO I DONT HAVE THAT HELP
