When the aneroid fell, it had fallen face upward in the deep snow narrowly missing a large rock. The only effect of the fall was instead of registering the actual fall from Oliver's pocket, say, three feet, the sensitive instrument registered a fall of six thousand feet. No doubt it felt as if it had fallen six thousand feet and registered its feelings accordingly.
