I'm logging a guess now that Melissa is involved in this somehow -- for a few reasons: she's the only main character who isn't evidently linked to the events of the past, so what are we keeping her around for? I think she has some link we don't know; also, she has started behaving strangely

not even 100 pages into this and I keep feeling vaguely nauseous from the descriptions of the MC's feelings about his nerve damage and fear of his attackers. which I guess is a marker of good writing but...ahhhh!!!
