Twenty-eight years earlier, in Cumaná, Venezuela, I had sat outside the Cueva del Guácharo reading about Indigenous people who had looked to their animals for warnings about impending earthquakes. Now, in 2016, after many failed attempts, we were ready to observe this behavior for ourselves—or so we hoped.

National parks are a good thing in principle, and we certainly should keep them, but we also need a much more flexible, and thus better, way of protecting animals and the natural resources they rely on in areas of the world that are heavily impacted by human activities in our current era of the Anthropocene.

For the farmers and for us, this was a strong indication that the information gathered from Indigenous people and recorded by Humboldt some two hundred years ago could indeed be right: a group of animals can collectively indicate that an earthquake might be imminent.
