"'...things seeped through...always quietly...indirectly. So people heard rumors and the rest they could guess. Of course, most people [didn't] believe the stories of Jews or...opponents of the regime. It was naturally thought...such persons would all exaggerate.'
Rumors, guesses enough to make a man know if he wanted badly to know...always involving persons [who'd] be suspected, 'naturally,' of exaggerating." (91)

Oh my goodness. There's so much of this book I feel like I want to quote/excerpt and then comment on top of the first one I picked here, but--having now typed out several--that would be A LOT, so I'm going to forego doing so for the time being. Maybe I'll include them in my review? Or maybe do a video review/dive on it with a good portion being me reading out sections that strike as having a profound relevance still to me? Eh, we'll see once I have it finished. Gonna get back to trying to make progress in all (or some of, at least) my current reads now...
