i love rereading this for lesbian cinema club i love glimpsing into a younger me. i relate so much to jess sometimes in her interaction with the world and the ways in which she still needs to grow

oh my godddhdhdhdh jess finally finding community with more trans people sob sob sob. her friendship with ruth makes me cry oh my goddhh. “the shades of gender in her voice were intricate, like mine” “i just wish we had words so pretty we’d go out of our way to say them out loud” “i’ve been searching for you all for such a long time. i can’t believe i’ve finally found you”

caught up to where i got to the last time i read this book…full circle moment. jess and the kids is one of my favorite parts of this. jess(e) and edna make me sooo fucking sad ohmygod jess feels like such a burden and so unlovable it breaks my heart. i love how butchness is freeing for her but also how conservative ideals in culture keep her trapped. she wants to “go back” but it wasn’t better.

guhh theresa’s section in this story is so heartwarming and so gut wrenching. they are so special to me… love seeing how jess changes with the ages and comparing the letter at the beginning of the book to them at this point.

i love how enjoyable, playful, and giggly jess’s first time having sex was it’s so sweet and lovely. they’re both kind of awkward but just want each other to feel good. jess i heart you..

guhh the way feinberg describes butches with such sensuality and love and tenderness makes me ache and melt. the whole segment of jess at school is so hard to read it makes my stomach curl.
