Paul Gilbert's 3 system model is an excellent way of looking at and understanding one's emotional regulation. I especially like his emphasis on the need to develop self-kindness and compassion, advising folks to think of it as taking a "physiotherapy approach to your brain ... exercising and training it" to help restart and strengthen your soothing system to restore balance between the 3 types of regulation systems.
