literally what is going on with sarah's characterization you can't just change a character's entire disposition to create narrative tension

Chapter four ends with the perfectly fine sentence: "Alone in Orchard Farm, I sank into the Mount Holyoke chair and wondered where my next step would take me." Then, chapter five starts with: "It didn't take me long to figure out that it involved finding the toilet," and I don't know why that decision was made, but it is definitely a choice.
