The similarities in this kingdom and that of Theoden in LotR are so striking. An Eowyn character, a Wormtongue, etc. Really interesting to read what Tolkien probably read as inspiration!

The symbolism is great in these later chapters- the King has been absent, and in his stead evil has flourished. Calls to repent by those who are virtuous are rejected and laughed at.
