Cotton Mather wanted to prevent union between peasant whites and enslaved blacks, because that type of rebellion would overthrow the rich white elites. The rich elites felt threatened due to English royalists wanting to govern New England in the 1690s.
Cotton Mather enforced the idea that all pure souls are white. Africans can return to their true “white” selves.
