He hated that Inej had seen him this way, that anyone had, but on the
heels of that thought came another: Better it should be her. In his bones, he knew that she would never speak of it to anyone, that she would never use this knowledge against him. She relied on his reputation. She wouldn’t want him to look weak. But there was more to it than that, wasn’t there?

Inej would never betray him. He knew it.

“You know I can do it, Kaz, and you know I’m not going to refuse. So why
ask?”

Kaz leaned back. “What’s the easiest way to steal a man’s wallet?”
“Knife to the throat?” asked Inej.
“Gun to the back?” said Jesper.
“Poison in his cup?” suggested Nina.
“You’re all horrible,” said Matthias.
Kaz rolled his eyes. “The easiest way to steal a man’s wallet is to tell
him you’re going to steal his watch. You take his attention and direct it where
you want it to go.
