Cate invaded his privacy looking through his files when he started staying late at work, taking secret phone calls- acting sus. It was a huge deal when he found out but she was never able to prove it.
Now they have trust issues, still trying to mend the relationship back together but there’s obvious strain. Their kids just think the mom went a little crazy for awhile, don’t know what actually happened.

The kid that Cate suspected was having an affair w Roan was Saffyre. Cate did go a little crazy- would watch saffyre at school..even followed her home, stalking her- then realized she was going crazy & stopped.

Saffyre- currently 17, lives w her uncle, Aaron, who’s only 27. She was raised by her grandpa but he passed a few months ago, grandma died before she was born, her mom died shortly after she was born, her dad never apart of the picture.
When she was 10 she was sexually assaulted, she began self harming after that. At 12 Aaron noticed the self harm & got her into therapy- with Dr. Roan…
Everything about their sessions was normal, Saffyre rlly liked talking w him, felt connected w him, got used to the routine, made progress, stopped hurting herself.
When she’s abt 15, has been seeing Roan for over 3 years now, he moves to her area & she sees his family moving everything in. She doesn’t mention in it their sessions, Roan ends up clearing her a few weeks later, is happy for the progress she’s made. Saffyre’s world is thrown off, her routine, her comfort she got from their sessions all gone now. She never told him abt what happened when she was 10, eventually wanted to tell him but not ready.

Roan & his family live in the city but their having renovations done on their place, they move out to Saffyre’s area cause it’s a convenient location, living in the more wealthier areas. Their flat is in beautiful traditional mansion that was turned into apartments. Theres a creepy house on their street, another one is under construction- whole house ripped down to build a new one.
One night Georgia is walking home, says a creepy man is following her, it’s the neighbor from the creepy house. A little while later, Georgia has a friend over, Tilly. She walks home at night & is grabbed by a man, they call police, cate secretly informs them of the creepy neighbor- Tilly ends up saying she lied & it never happened the next day- werid…Also a bunch of assaults have been happening in the area, even starting to happen is broad daylight.

It’s Valentines day. Cate & Roan are still trying to patch up their relationship. Roan gets a card sent to him, it has pretty feminine writing on it. Cate refuses to open it, doesn’t wanna invade his privacy.
As soon as Roan opens the card he’s like I gotta go for a run, is gone for a longggggg time, doesn’t answer cates calls lmao
When Georgia tries looking at the card cate freaks out a little, won’t let anyone open the card lmao hides it in a drawer.
They go out to a bar after Roan’s back, have a good time like everything perfect, cate lets herself forget abt the card…

Past: abt 3 weeks after Saffyre’s sessions w Roan end, she begins watching him…hardcore stalking him lol she sees him flirting w a much younger lady, hears him ask her to grab a drink & then they walk off…

Owen- a computer science teacher, works w teens 16-18. Were introduced to him being fired from him job for making inappropriate sexual comments toward 2 students at a Christmas party. The girls had convinced him to come to the party, he got drunk there, said things abt his own and the girls sexual preferences, touched their hair. They also claim he talks to girls dismissively in his lessons. He’s being investigated, had to clean out his office until they get to the bottom of it.
He lives in the creepy house across from Roan & Cate, w his aunt, their flat is also in a mansion that was converted into apartments.
He’s the guy who Georgia thought followed him home & Cate reported to police. From his POV- he just got fired, on his way home reading about other men with “false accusations” online, he’s offended that Georgia thinks he’s following her, thinks to himself a lot abt how he wants women- not children, how women victimize themselves.
When Georgia’s friend is assaulted, police knock on his door to question him, he says he doesn’t know anything abt it. He’s growing tired of being accused of things from teenage girls he has no interest in.
The more Owen goes online, the more he connects w this one guy (username YourLoss) who’s openly an incel and very angry abt it. Once Owen discovers what an incel is & connects w the guys anger, his perspective changes. He’s a 33 year old virgin, up until this point he’s always viewed himself as the issue on why women don’t take interest in him, now he’s placing blame on the world like YourLoss.
After 2 weeks of work, the investigation is finished & the schools found that several students confirmed the inappropriate behavior from the Christmas party- plus that Owen is sexist in class- belittles the girls, grades them harder, is nicer to the boys, uses inappropriate language, even blasphemy for bringing up religion…Owen acts clueless, like there should be no issue w his behavior…The school offers him to do a program, take counseling & he could keep his job. Owen says no cause he views it as brainwash, doesn’t think he’s in the wrong.

Owen’s mom died when he was 18. His dad has a new family & other kids, doesn’t rlly involve himself in Owen’s life. He’s lived w his aunt Tessie for 15 years since his mom’s death, she seems to tolerate him but spends a lot of time at her other properties, away from him. He’s alone a lot, reads YourLoss’s blog, decided he’ll start sitting at bars alone, analyzing & judging people the way YourLoss does…

Owen reaches out to YourLoss eventually, they connect & decided to meet up. YourLoss turns out to be a short, hairy, dirty looking man named Bryn. He tells Owen abt how he wants to start a revolution, a war.
He believes that in the past, women needed men, relied on them, so there was a woman for every man. Nowadays women are self sufficient, they seek looks and personality, which he lacks, so he’s angry. He believes that eventually his breed of men will die out since all the Stacey’s & chads are the only ones reproducing.
He asks owen to join his cause to fight back, compares them to a dying breed of animals! He gives Owen a bottle of pills & tells him if he can’t do it legally than take it…tells him that it’s not about just fucking that it’s about keeping their breed from dying off…
After meeting Bryn, Owen feels sorry for him & all the other delusional incels he thought he was bonding w on the blogs. He realizes that the reason all those men are alone is because of themselves & their mindsets- not the world. He even feels better abt himself, realizes he’s not that bad if there are guys like Bryn out there & downloads tinder.
Owen meets a woman named Deana on tinder, they have a really nice date on valentines day suprisingly & he starts viewing the world less cynically.
That night he’s looking out at Roans house, sees a girl outside looking in through the windows…they make eye contact

Abt a week after Valentine’s Day, it’s all over the news Saffyre is missing, was last seen on valentines.
Cate finally opens the letter she forgot abt but it’s just an innocent card from a patient.

Detectives show up at Owen’s asking if he’d seen anything pertaining to Saffyre’s disappearance on valentines, he can’t help them much but does say he saw someone standing outside Roans house that night & it was a girl, admits he was drunk so he didn’t get a good look at the person, is very nervous around the police. They thank him for the info & tell him they’ll be back w more questions. Owen’s nervous that Roans family will make him look bad tho cause the daughter thinks he’s a creep & the moms always giving him dirty looks.
When detectives talk to cate she lies & tells them Roan was in bed on valentines w her around midnight when he wasn’t. They go to Roans office too, he assumes she’s a runaway. Cate tries getting info out of Roan abt if Saffyre would have ran away & they start to go into a dark place again- she’s suspicious of him & thinks he’s hiding things, he gaslights her…She tells him she lied to police abt where he was that night, asks him what he was doings while she was waiting in bed for him & that he took awhile…he’s just like “what are you talking abt?”

The next day the construction building is blocked off by tons of detectives, they ask Owen’s aunt for access to search their yard too…

Following day detective come & speak to roan & cate together, since they were interviewed separate it took them a little to realize they were married. Now they’re asking what time they were in bed, cate tries lying to them saying yes but Roan admits that he was taking out the trash apparently- at midnight, drunk lol. He tells police that he saw Owen out there staring at him, that Owen’s a creep, starts implying he’s the culprit.

Past: Saffyre sees Roan’s son one night while she’s stalking. He’s out at the construction site, smoking & joint, has a fox friend that he feeds. Saffyre snaps a pic of him, she’s amazed at how cool his fox friend is.
Stalking roan has become her hobby, she sees Roan (in his 50s) have a very active affair w much younger ginger lady, Alicia. Saff stalks her too lol finds out where she lives, takes tons of pics her w Roan. She feels bad for his wife.
Saff keeps her hobby through summer into fall, her grandpa passes away in September, she befriends the fox too, starts spending a lot of time outside in the cold, likes being in nature. She takes karate lessons & roans son starts taking them too but he quit right after she tried making convo w him..he’s a v awkward kid. Saff feels more connected to animals & nature than humans.
By December she spends majority of her time stalking Roans life & hanging out near his house, at the construction site, chillin w the fox. She has a pretty good view of Owen’s room from the site, starts watching him too- feels bad from what she observes.
They run into each other the night of the Christmas party. He’s drunk, smiles at her, they say merry Christmas- it’s a very nice interaction for both of them. She names him Clive lol.

Right before new years her uncle Aaron got her a kitten in attempt to make her want to stay inside more, it worked for a few days but by New Year’s night Saff was right back outside, stalkin again- this time brining a sleeping bag, overnight bag & sleeping in the construction site!
She sees Roan sneak out one night, make a phone call to his mistress- he tells her he loves her & that next year they’ll be together, to just have faith & it’ll all work out…

Present: detectives found a phone case in Owen’s yard, now they have a search warrant for his room, they show up to bring him into the station w tons of press outside photographing him…he yaks on the way there remembering the date-rape drugs Bryn gave him that he forgot to get rid of…

At the station Owen is questioned, asks for a lawyer, when the lawyer finally shows up they dump the load on him. While waiting they were able to search his room & interview more people, everyone says Owen is a creep & has creepy interactions w him, there was blood found on outside the wall by the bottom of his window…they found the pills & his browser history of incel shit, alll the things he’s commented…he’s officially arrested.

The following day it makes press headlines, Roan is in a bubbly mood, so happy & relieved the local creep is in jail, so is cate. She gathers everyone to eat in the morning but Josh isn’t home…he doesn’t come home the entire day, is gone for hours until dinner time…Cate gets so worried, Georgia tells her abt how he hangs out in the construction site sometimes, she checks there for him but eventually texts saying he was at the movies w phone in silent…cate thinks he’s been out on a date so she’s super relived he’s ok

In jail, Owen tells police abt Bryn, how he got the pills, abt the website he found him on but they can’t track him down, everything’s deleted, no trace of him. Tessie visits Owen, she thinks he did it, Owen swears he did not do it but lowkey he doesn’t even remember what happened after seeing her..just assumed he went to bed. Still swears his innocence.

Next day- another woman is attacked, this time she’s middle aged! Owen is still in jail sooooo…Cates sus of Josh now cause he was gone yesterday at the same time the assault occurred…she looks through his room & finds a hidden bag w a bunch of Roans work out clothes in there- stinky & used. There’s gloves & a balavlava in there too…The lady who was assaulted reported the man to be wearing a balaclava & has the same body description as Josh…yikes
Cate puts the stuff back…starts making a list of all the assaults in the area & a timeline. In most of the assaults the man groaps the victim but the most recent one was pulled into an alley & forced to do a bunch of things….
W the timeline, cate sees that it could easily be her husband or her son…she thinks abt Tilly who “lied” abt being assaulted, meets her mom for coffee. She shares that Tilly’s turned into a homebody, barley goes out anymore, neither of them can understand why she lied but the mom says that Georgia was her only friend & the girl thought very highly of their whole family….

Past: Saff starts sleeping outside everynight…not even sleeping just going outside, walking around, being in nature. She has anxiety indoors so everynight she sneaks out when Aaron goes to bed & sneaks back in by dawn.
One morning on her way home, she runs into Harrison, the guy who assaulted her when she was 10. He tries talking to her, is happy to see her…she walks right past him, straight home & relapses self harming again.

Present: another girl comes forward, a student of Owen’s from 6 years ago claims he forced himself on her too at a college Christmas party. Owen denies it, swears up & down he would never hurt any girls, he doesn’t like teenage girls, that he’s afraid of women & isn’t the type to do those things. Detectives tell him they’ve noticed all the incidents happen when he’s drunk, they think that drinking brings out another personality inside him, w lower inhibitions he’s not afraid to do what he wishes.

After Cate visits w georgias friends mom, she comes home to Aaron waiting at her house. They go inside & talk, he finds it odd that saff knew where roan lived, always wondered why she was at his house the night she disappeared. Stuck w his grief & questions, he started going through her room…found a paper in a pair of pants..says he wanted to bring to to cate first before police..
The paper has all the dates of the assaults, plus the day Tilly got attacked, has 4 names written- Josh, Clive, Alicia & Roan….

Past: by mid January, Saff wants to take her power back, she doesn’t want to keep hurting herself to feel better for what Harrison did to her- she wants to hurt him.
One night while she’s sleeping outside, Josh finds her while he’s out for a smoke. They start talking & get along rlly well, bond instantly. They open up abt trauma, Josh was robbed & felt powerless, Saff relates to the feeling & tells him abt Harrison- he was a year older, groomed her & made her think he was a friend, assaulted her 3 times before summer started & school was let out.
Saff tells Josh abt her need for revenge & he says he wants to help her…
Josh also knows his dad is having an affair, hates him, thinks his mom deserves the world. Saff tells him abt her little stalking hobby lol gives him all the info she has on his mistress, Alicia.
Josh joins Saff in her stalking, they find out where Harrison lives. When the assaults start, Saff is convinced it’s Harrison but she doesn’t want to say anything, she wants to be the one to punish him.

Present: confused by the note Aaron gave her, Cate asks Josh if he knew Saff…he says no. When she checks his room again to see if the running clothes are still stashed away in a bag, they’re gone. Roan comes home later, he decided to run home from work…he’s wearing the running clothes…

Owen is getting rlly worn down in jail, starting to question his own memories, starting to notice how many blackouts he has, starts questioning if he did it…He insists to police that if they track down Bryn, they’ll find the true culprit, gives them info to track him down but when they do, what he says hits media-
He tells them that the date-rape army thing was Owen’s idea, that incels get a bad rep & Owen’s making it worse for the rest of them! That he doesn’t think Owen’s a true incel, just a r*pist posing as one…
As Owen’s losing his shit after reading the article his lawyer brings him, police come in telling him that Alicia has come forward saying she saw him the on valentines night, talking to saff…now that they remind Owen of her, he’s able to remember more.
Owen came home drunk, he saw a girl looking at Roans house, then she walked toward him, called him Clive, asked for a boost up to the garage, he waited while she was up there & then helped her down.
She fell- dropped her phone case & got scratched a little on the wall, then thanked Owen & ran off.
Owen remembers Alicia arguing w Roan outside, yelling at him…Now that detectives have all that, they starting to believe Owen more & finally have helpful info.

Tilly’s mom calls cate, tells her it’s very obvious something happened to Tilly & she’s too scarred to say who…asks cate what to do, says she’s scarred too…Cate panics, starts thinking abt where Roan & Josh were that night…tells her she’s sorry gtg & hangs up!!

When Josh gets home that night she asks abt the running clothes, he says he took them to go running & washed them, put them back before anyone notice. Cates like that’s weird, he freaks out, yells at her for the first time ever, says he pissed himself…

Valentine’s Day, what really happened-
The card Roan got that day wasn’t from a student named Molly, it was from Alicia & it said she was gonna off herself if he didn’t leave his family for her…
Josh secretly read it & told Saff, I’m assuming he switched it out too so his mom wouldn’t see it. Alicia showed up at their house that night, couldn’t take their affair anymore. Josh asked saff to come over, she saw Alicia at the door, tried talking her into leaving but she wouldn’t listen…Roan came out & Saff ran off, saw Owen, asked for boost up on to the garage, saw Roan & Alicia’s messy fight- he hit her multiple times, was very rough w her, dragging her away from his house…
Owen was drunk asf & didn’t help Saff get down off the garage, she jumped down, hurting herself & dropping her phone, then ran off to find Alicia. When she caught up to her, she could see that a man was following her too…& it was Harrison.

Present-
Josh comes to his mom telling her what happened, they go to police. We find out after Saff ran off, Josh never saw her again. She called around 1am saying she was going into hiding, asking if he can watch Harrison for her & catch him in the act of attacking someone, that she can only come back when he’s put away…
Josh used his dad’s running clothes when he was stalking Harrison, he got caught one night tho, Harrison gripped him up & yelled at him…Josh rlly did piss himself 🥺
He tells police he never caught Harrison doing anything but to plz get him off the streets so Saff can come home ahhhhhh Josh 🥺🥺🥺🥺

Valentines- Saff runs up behind Harrison, puts him in a headlocks & takes him down! She breaks the fingers he used to assault her, says the same things he said to her when she was a kid! Harrison ends up passing out, Alicia runs up like wtf is going on, saff & Alicia run off while he screams that he’s gonna kill her…
Alicia takes Saff back to her place, lets her stay there for awhile. Saff opens up abt everything’s that’s happened to her, goes into psychosis pretty hard during her time there..Seeing everything abt Owen in the papers, questioning if he’s rlly a bad person, thinking back to her interactions w him & knowing deep down he’s not. Constantly being paranoid Harrison would come for her…

She eventually snaps out of it, asks Alicia to tell police that she saw her run off that night, that Owen is innocent & that she’s alive & safe.
Combined w the info Josh gave, plus Tilly came forward admitting Harrison was the one who assaulted her & threatened to kill her & her mom if she told…Harrison is finally charged.

We end the book w Owen getting therapy & moving out of Tessie’s, he learns how to view woman as humans instead of just women, is dating the woman from Valentine’s Day again, can work w kids again now that he’s gotten therapy.

Bryns investigated more, exposed for the weirdo he is, put on a terrorist watchlist.

Cate leaves Roan, her & the kids move back to their newly renovated house in the city & he gets an apartment, begs for her back but she just wants to live her new life without him.


We end the book finding out Harrison was a patient of Roans too, he wrote r*pe fantasies abt other kids…Alicia caught Roan jerking off once to an essay a kid wrote- she thinks it was one of Harrison’s fantasies…Also the balaclava Josh used when he was out stalking w Saff belonged to Roan soooo he was out attacking people too.
