I am already enamored with this novel. The characterization, syntax, dialogue--all are deftly woven into a restrained, thoughtful narrative. The thematic foundation--poverty, family, alienation, to start--is profoundly moving. The description of Lucy's loneliness during childhood--told from her unassuming perspective--rivals that of Dick Gregory's more defensive description in his narrative essay, "Shame."
