She sits across the table
I sneak glances,
listening for the music of
fingers against hair.

She combs,
pulls her hair back
tight, rolls it
around a finger, scrunches it
holding a shaggy mess.
For half a bachelor’s she does this.
But I like to see it like this.

Not because it is messy.
it is because of the way
her hair falls
when she releases the bundle.
Easily, like the curtains
around a low sun in the evening.
