An interesting analogy, so the driver needs the critic?

:D I have heard a lot written of critics, some rather harsh, others playful. Erik Satie said in his 'Eulogy of critics' (tongue lodged firmly in cheek):I am dazzled by the presence of a critic, he shines so brightly that I blink for more than an hour afterwards... I kiss the footprints of his slippers... I drink in his words from a big stemmed glass, out of politeness.
Fair to say he viewed them as rather useless creatures who loved to discuss things theoretically that they were unable to do practically, as your analogy suggests. Not always the case of course. :)
What a delightful quote, Jonathan! Erik Satie’s sarcasm is as funny as it might be poisonous for a skin-thin type of a critics (if there are any:-)). There are quite a few quotes on the subject here as well. But quite a bit less ironic. For example:Pigs at the pastry cart.
John Updike called critics.
