3-4 chapters in and the book is very very diferent than I expected it to be. I imagined it to be more extreme exposure to war front action and its horror. But it is more pensive, more memoir esque where it feels like someone has a very detached , nostalgic tone about the entire thing. It has the weightlessness of youth which brings with it resilience.

First, I didnot know this was part of a trilogy.
Having said that, the first chapter does not mince it words. It introduces you to the action right away - the dehumanization, the disillusionment, the helplessness, the small acts of charity and the selfishness, the pedagogy of old people who won't pay for it .
I can very well see why it is what it is.
