If Gallipoli had been my operation, I would have made many of the same calls, but taken several more months to plan the operation, then set out from the beginning with both naval and amphibious forces, not given away my intentions by a paltry naval attempt without the army. Gallipoli does not seem at all like folly from the perspective of the War Council in early 1915, and with better planning it might have worked.

Much of the element of surprise was lost by the naval operations and by FAILING TO FOLLOW THEM UP prior to the army landings on April 25th. I get it, you don't want to lose a bunch of battleships, even if they are old and due to be scrapped. But ONE CROWDED HOUR OF GLORIOUS LIFE IS WORTH AN AGE WITHOUT A NAME! Especially when victory in a world war is on the line.
