I swear, if this book never becomes critical of his understanding of love, I'm going to have an aneurysm

There's little to no importance in the current timeline, where the man is hiding out from a gunman. It's a frail excuse to slide back and forth in time to events that are clearly far more important.

It's not that the idea of using a single scene and then reflecting on past times is inherently a bad idea; it's just that the single scene does not matter. Maybe it will matter later.
