Céline tells us of two ways the Thérèse would mortify her eyes: 1) She did allow herself to look at her relatives when they came to visit. She was behind a veil, so her relatives did not know this but she very much longed to see their faces. 2) She did not let herself look at the clock when she was on her knees in prayer to see how much time was left.
