It's hard to know what is intentional turn of the century racism, and what is 90s ignorance. I'm erring on the side of the former so far since it seems to be fairly progressive in a lot of ways, and I know Lackey was a head of the times as far as representation.

I don't think I can remember reading a book with a male lead as reprehensible as Jason. Finding out he KNOWS what the cartoonishly evil Breaker is up to and even sort of approves of it is a baffling character trait for someone we're supposed to like.

I read a review for this that was like, "this story is 75% bathing, walking, brushing a horse and eating" and now I can't escape that they were dead on.

I think this is my first Lackey? Enjoying it so far. Never really enjoyed America as a fantasy setting, but the concept of a magical rail tycoon is pretty fun.
