The first 60% of this book is a Martian-esque hard-ish sci-fi narrative which softens somewhat towards its ending at Cleft.
Then there’s a 5,000 time jump and we’re now deep in sci-fi fantasy land.

Okay, so people surviving under ground for 5,000 might be possible but in submarines with the hard rain boiling the seas off? Seems unlikely.

I’m not sure I can finish this book.
The second story is just so detached from the first and there barely seems to be a plot.

This sci-fi fantasy section is a real slog. The final hoorah is going to have to be amazing to justify it.

Not sure about this final 1/3.
The change from hard sci-fi to fantasy is a little jarring, not to mention all the new characters and factions that you now have to suddenly care about.
The Eye is pretty cool though.

This book goes from 1500 plucky survivors muddling through, awaiting a heroic supply run to three years later, 98% of people are dead and the human race is boned in a single chapter!
Funny if the last human in space dies just as those under mountains and the sea re-emerge.

What kind of pass have we come to? The entire Earth has been destroyed, Julia.
I was enjoying this book’s science-y narrative with minimal character depth and I’m not sure the introduction of this kind of politics bodes well.

Have come to grips with the style of this book; the characters are just decorations to or a means of observing the narrative of Earth’s final days and what comes next.
Pleased with that the death of Earth under the hard rain was handled. No harrowing individual POVs of giant waves, fire storms etc.
The lethality of the event seems to have been lessened, with subs etc. , which I’m not sure I like.

Things are picking up.
Getting a bit more used to the writing style; shades of Andy Weir.
