Starting this again and back a bit since it's been some time. I love this book and want to savor it. Jacques is an amazing chef and person because of this lovely history... told with humility and appreciation for his hard working childhood.

Returning to this book because I was savoring it too long. Time to complete it this year. I love his story of a short country boy that barely saw over the wood fired oven when he started cooking and worked 7 days a week.
This chapter is 'Paris' ... 'A year had passed since I'd arrived in Paris, homeless and jobless, a rough country kid long on ambition and low on sophistication. ...'

Jacques brushes off the hardship he endured as a child and then as a young apprentice with such ease. You know it’s there but he doesn’t complain. It was the gig. He loved to cook and was restless without new challenges. That meant a TON of back breaking work and that is just what it would take. I so admire his humor through all these challenges he faced head on.

Love this book already. A hard working man's childhood starts with escaping in WWII. I'm hooked.
