Bad things keep happening to our protagonists, but somehow it all seems so contrived and unrealistic... Like characters are behaving in illogical ways for the sole purpose of causing Neema hardship.

Nothing really makes sense. The central premise that everybody hates Neema because she was the scribe for an imperial order, makes no sense at all. She just did the calligraphy for something the emperor and brother had fault, and the guards for the exile were far more involved.

The world makes no sense either.
