Interesting comparison made to Japan's hikikomori as an archetype of the north korean state (49-50). North Korea's isolation with a tinge of reliance on handouts from other countries is pertinent and quite similar to the hikikomori who do not leave their room and rely on parental figures to feed them

The waves crashing against the rocky coast is such an important trope for North Korea, Myers calls attention to that in the meeting with Bill Clinton and Jong-Il, where a photo of just that is the backdrop of the meeting. Symbolizing ultimately that the waves of their adversaries cannot reach the motherland. (95). The imagery is also prevalent in lots of North Korean art as well.

Interesting explanations of the North Korean art straying from the popular interpretations of motifs such as forests, but its most important motif, white remains the same notion of purity.
