how many more times am I going to read stories of how people's parents' met (Rushdie, Eugenides, Chabon, etc.) even though I do dig it... I just find it hackneyed at this point. I feel that she uses lots of narrative sleight of hand -- the writing is subtly clever and imaginative

thinking a lot about James Wood's "hysterical realism" -- how many more books am I going to read with longgggg prologues about how the characters' parents met (Middlesex, Adventures of Kavalier and Clay...) I dig it though ... I do .... maybe I just find it hackneyed at this point. there's a lot of narrative sleight of hand that I enjoy here. I should be annotating like "hmm she introduces this here" but lazy
