I'm gonna do a little review for every essay.
-The spike
This is just a chapter from "Down and out in Paris and London". I prefer the Paris section, but I enjoyed rereading this. It contains all the sharp observations on the nature of poverty and demonstrates the dehumanzing nature of the spikes (20th century homeless shelters) which really just make sure to keep the "tramps" poor by preventing them getting employed
