Ma Joad speaking about anxiety as “living a thousand lives” and if you do so “it’s too much” is interesting. Also kinda sad to hear her discuss how she isn’t able to do so like Al because she has to take care of everyone else. Kinda speaks to the issues with being a caregiver and a woman in general tbh, even back in the 1920s

“And now they were weary and frightened because they had gone against a system they did not understand and it had beaten them. They knew the team and wagon were worth much more. They knew the buyer man would get much more, but they didn’t know how to do it.” Beautiful prose and and great examination of the power of capital to exploit those in more precarious positions for profit.
