Kids intuit that they need to speak with the local accent? My 7-year-old self would have to strongly disagree. She hated the local accent with everything she had. She clung to her roots, even when the roots were decaying in her hands.

I think it’s more, or at least equally, about making sure you’re not overstepping or appropriating than true feelings of a Basque identity.

I think the whole conversation about people FEELING more Basque if they speak Basque more frequently than Spanish is missing a piece of the puzzle: the social pressure of acknowledging your tie to a historically oppressed group. You don’t get to claim that you’re Basque if you don’t speak the language. Doing so would be a social error.
