On another note, I'm a little concerned about Updike's ability to write from the perspective of someone like Ahmad. I don't believe that certain demographics should be barred from writing about other demographics, but for a story as introspective as this one, I think I'd trust a Muslim author's perspective more. This isn't to disparage Updike's work. I'm just not knowledgeable enough to dispute what's portrayed.
