“Judy Ryan brought in an armful of early cabbages from the garden. Clusters of frost diamonds nestled in the wrinkles of its green leaves…There was a supper! Pale green colcannon light and fluffy as bogcotton and floating in good rich gravy…And the stuffing itself! Soul of onion, breath of thyme and smoothness of potato. That stuffing caressed your palate and glided down your throat…to your heart’s core”

I want to know more about Big Bill! He reminds me of an LMM sailor character.

“Miss Hope brought me in and sat me down at the white-scrubbed table under the muslin-curtained window. On warm days I was given lemonade and fairy cakes. In cold weather, Miss Hope gave me hot buttery pancakes speckled with sultanas, and a glass of warm milk sweetened with honey and with a dusting of cinnamon on its surface” (96).

Chapter 6 is a funny combination of anecdotes but they actually do work well together. Gran is so wonderful. I want to try her mushroom ketchup.
