Sutton's essay traces how (Baptistic) individualism inevitably tends toward subjectivism and the cultural/spiritual fallout that ensues. It is gold.

Andrew Meredith "Modern evangelicalism views subjective aspects such as meditation on Scripture, prayer (often described as "Just being with God"), and renunciation of "worldly" things as the end of holiness. These things are not to be disparged, but they are the means to another end: positive objective obedience. Jesus told His disciples that they were to “keep My commandments” as a demonstration of their love for Him. Paul stated that his ultimate purpose in evangelism was to bring about "the obedience of faith."

Such statements define the goal (holiness) in objective terms, contrary to many of the “discipleship” programs of today, which lead one to think he is holy if he prays, reads the Bible often, and refrains more-or-less from "fleshly" indulgences. Carried to its logical conclusion, really holy people would do these things all the time, but “love” of God or devotion to Him outside of obedience to His commandments is a lie (John 15:10; 1 John 2:3-5). Subjective spirituality is deceptive because it gives the illusion of holiness without the reality."
