In 1981, a group of such thinkers, including Maher Hathhout (d. 2015), Taha Jabir al-Alwani (d. 2016), Ismail Raja Faruqi (d. 1986), and Anwar Ibrahim (b. 1947) the current Prime Minister of Malaysia, formed the International Institute for Islamic Thought, or IIIT.
While they were not, of course, puritanical Salafis, the Enlightenment Salafism of Riḍā was clearly demonstrated in their thought.

Salafism in Malaysia - The most notable Salafi preachers to emerge after studying in Saudi Arabia were Rasul Dahri, Ismail Omar, Sulaiman Nordin, Johari Mat, and Hussein Yee, although returning Malaysian students from Jordan also contributed to the spread of Salafism, especially as al-Albānī’s presence seemed to inspire a number of them to commit to it.

Sayyid Qutb was pivotal in the emergence of Jihadi-Salafism. His books Maʿālim fī al-Tarīq (Milestones on the Path) and Fī Ẓilāl al-Qurʾān (In the Shade of the Qurʾan) provide the basic ideas upon which his jihadism is founded, namely (1) the concept of (takfīr) excommunication of rulers, (2) ignorance (jāhiliyya) of the masses, (3) the central role of jihad in reviving Islam.
