Potential spoiler. Just me speculating. I wonder if Herman is the Eschaton, instead of just an agent for the Eschaton. Except, he doesn't't know who is targeting Wednesday... The Eschaton is a supremely powerful AI capable of time travel. It would know who this group threatening multiple planet genocide is, if not now then in the future. Hmmm.

The teen with the mcguffin in this book is named Wednesday. She's an outsider with a surly attitude, who loves to wear black. you can't tell me Charles Stross isn't writing fanfiction about his favorite Addams Family character.

Clever idea to write high school stories without underage characters: place the character on a planet where the age of majority is 30 and you can't graduate from mandatory high school until 22.

The last book was a fun romp, despite the dense sci-fi concepts holding up the structure of the story. But this book has gone to some very dark places very quickly. There's already been one rape (and yes, it is rape when your life is in danger), a supernova (described from the perspective of someone about to die), and a horric massacre.
