Only spent half a chapter on Trump and nothing substantive or critical except she was rooting for Hillary and, now, Kamala. She's biting her tongue because she doesn't know the outcome of the 2024 election when the book was written, and knows that Trump can retaliate against those who criticize him. She then skips to COVID, where she backtracked on lockdowns when it became unpopular. She wilted under pressure.

After a dull 4/5ths of a book, she finally starts criticisms, including how Modi needs to do more on global warming reduction, while China and the US create seven and fifteen times more carbon emissions per capita, respectively. She doesn't bring these criticisms to the Chinese, however. And she finally gets to Trump, whose provocations she ignored and is pretending he's a sane person instead of a master manipulator.

This book is so bland. She eviscerated her past of any interesting or controversial fact as if she was trying to escape prosecution. She vacillates on whether she was pro or anti-abortion, and whether she was pro or anti-gay marriage. She glosses over 9/11 and then sinks back to covering useless NGOs and meetings. This is a very poor book and insight into a world leader's trials and tribulations. 1 star so far.

Merkel rose through the ranks of get party quickly after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Within 10 years, in 2001, she was the leader and put a bid in for Chancellor, which she later withdrew. She is a conservative but doesn't really mention accomplishments... She was against gay marriage before she was for it, but she's for nuclear energy. Up to the part where 9/11 changed the geopolitical landscape forever.

Growing up in the segregated Germany, she lived in the eastern portion with heavy Soviet rule and a heavy bent to socialism. After the wall came down, she became the press secretary for the DA party, who wanted to reunify Germany. She was a chemist by trade though, and gave up that job in the 90s to be a career civil servant.
