the whole description of finding The Book was remarkably tedious - Godden in her writing for children mode - the tension deliberate of perhaps someone has taken in - and of course only the faithful Cecily knows where it is.

The will is read - completely as expected. I think the point is will Tracy be deflected from her true path - by the manipulative and abusive others - lead by Walter - with his financial dampers - are they even correct? It's really a tale of will the good - Peter and Tracy be swallowed by the avarice and covetousness of the greedy ones - quite biblical in its structure.

The wonderful section with Eliza and Jeremy Baxter - a fellow of Trinity College - studied Early Christian and Medieval Literature - can read Latin, Greek, - Anglo-Saxon and Old French. This makes me laugh because they are the languages Marie de France would have known and understood when she was writing her Lais. Several copies in my Currently Reading - including Old French. I love the serendipities of books !

I re-read the whole of the first chp and realised how dense it is with information - presumably for what happens next. I also saw how it needs to be read quite slowly and how I - possibly any reader, needs time to follow the threads which can be complex and also the descriptions of the house, next to the quarry, the village above, on the road on the skyline and the layout of the gardens, the stream, waterfall, lane.

How are you managing keeping all the characters straight in your head?! I admit to being a tad confused

Hi Petra - I copied out the family tree. I'm using an online version - so it's awkward to keep going to the first page. And I keep trying not to read the comments in the thread - they're all talking about the ending - which has me intrigued! :)
I’m reading an old hardback edition with no family tree in it. I *think* I’m starting to get the hang of who is who - more or less, anyway! And yes, I’m also wondering about that dramatic ending 🧐
