the whole description of finding The Book was remarkably tedious - Godden in her writing for children mode - the tension deliberate of perhaps someone has taken in - and of course only the faithful Cecily knows where it is.

The wonderful section with Eliza and Jeremy Baxter - a fellow of Trinity College - studied Early Christian and Medieval Literature - can read Latin, Greek, - Anglo-Saxon and Old French. This makes me laugh because they are the languages Marie de France would have known and understood when she was writing her Lais. Several copies in my Currently Reading - including Old French. I love the serendipities of books !

I re-read the whole of the first chp and realised how dense it is with information - presumably for what happens next. I also saw how it needs to be read quite slowly and how I - possibly any reader, needs time to follow the threads which can be complex and also the descriptions of the house, next to the quarry, the village above, on the road on the skyline and the layout of the gardens, the stream, waterfall, lane.
