I think I nearly swallow like a cartoon wolf. “Don’t talk about that when your mom’s about to walk in any second.”
“Why?”
“Because it’s going to be hard not to think about it,” I grumble, “and I don’t need to make my intentions obvious.”
“Begone, foul beast,” she says theatrically, holding her hands over her eyes, “or my mother will find me a lightskirt—”
“Lightskirt?”
“The lightest of skirts,” she says solemnly.

“Think they all saw?”
“Definitely.”
“Want to back out?”
“What, like shove you away? Not sure that would work.”
“We could try it,” he says. “You could punch me.”
“Tempting,” I say, “but no.”
“Might make things awkward if you don’t.”
“Definitely will. Why, are you backing out?”
“Definitely not. I’m just covering all our bases.”

“Um, are you joking?” Jamie asks, at which point I realize she’s holding a balloon.
“Wait, is it your birthday?” asks Teo, who happens to be walking by with Dash at the precise moment I remember I’m eighteen years old today. He comes to an exaggerated halt, like a turntable warp from a sitcom laugh track. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“IBB,” shouts her brother from the hallway, and Bel jumps. “MOM WANTS YOU TO SET THE TABLE.”
“FINE,” she roars back, and then winces when she remembers that she just shouted in my ear. “Sorry, sorry—”

“going to feed you absolutely everything she has in this house.”
I don’t tell her that actually, I think I’ve been starving for whatever this exact feeling is.
“I could eat,” I say, letting Bel pull me to my feet.
