I got to page 120 and still had no idea what was going on. I’ve heard McCarthy is a literary giant, but this wasn’t the book to start with. The main character, Bobby, is clearly intelligent — but the whole thing was buried under chapters about his sister’s rambling thoughts that felt like word count fluff.

Whole pages of incoherent sentences that left me more confused than intrigued. It was like reading a fever dream… in braille… with the lights off. (Okay one final qwhatoosh of a whip I promise..💥) Reading this felt like trudging through wet concrete with no idea where the pavement ends. The book gave me nothing to hold onto and every reason to put it down.

Maybe the deeper meaning flew over my head, or maybe this book was just never meant for me. Either way, I’ll be saving my pretty bookmarks for something less pretentious next time!

There was probably a reason why she and I parted ways; subtle foreshadowing if you will. Why I didn’t read this book when she first bought it, I’ll never know. Could’ve saved myself a heartbreak, and quite possibly a headache ✨
