I’ve always had a hard time reconciling my feminist beliefs with how Islam is practiced. Some notes: Pre-Islamic Jahiliyyah society was the only place in the Mediterranean where women could walk freely and wear whatever they want. Sexual norms were even more permissive than today, with women having multiple male sexual partners (keep in mind, there were no contraceptives at this time).

Roushda Khan Islam was always advertised as the religion that gave women rights during a time where they had none. We’re taught they were finally allowed to own property, conduct business, and fight in war due to Islam establishing those rights. However, the first few chapters of this book reveal otherwise - those norms existed before Islam was introduced to the region. I am looking forward to reading how the curtailment of women’s freedoms during Islam (and after, by the enforcers of the patriarchal tradition) made sense with the egalitarian nature of the Quran. This is a critical reading for every Muslim, woman or not, during a time where the Hadith are being followed more closely than the spiritual teachings of the Quran.
