Some species, Aunt Orchid said, required thirst. If you overwatered them, their roots would grow too shallow and lazy, no longer needing to search the soil deeply, dependent on being fed by our hands rather than trusting their own depths. Cathy believed that the more she and Edie thirsted, the deeper their roots would snare inside each other. They would find inside each other’s bodies all the water they wanted.
