This book gets even more dynamic, nuanced environments (from church to strip club) for the protagonist’s expressions as a grieving sister who is more than that and always that.

Diving back and forth between dicey memories and the present through grief is painful & dynamic, but Akúa’s older sister Tamika’s physical/emotional abuse cannot be justifiable?! I don’t know where this book is will go from here. Tamika being abandoned in her youth is horrible, but how can that be Akúa’s burden to bear now…. I definitely want to talk to someone about this book.

This is a crushing and unimaginable entrance to a novel making 20 year old protagonist Akúa’s pain bleed from the pages. Hard to read and hard to stop. I’ll continue-
