Find it so bizarre teachers (and that police officer he mentioned earlier in the book) could harm kids as punishment. Saying his hands hurt too much to open the door after he was beaten is horrifying to me, sounds so excessive. I'm glad the headmaster "retired" soon after, and got humiliated at the assembly making that announcement, but it's a shame he didn’t lose more than his job.

I try my best to read a chapter each time I sit down to read this, but the chapters are pretty long and I find myself zoning out partway through, so I've been allowing myself to stop when there's a break. It's interesting, I just don't find myself struggling to put it down like I do with a good fiction book.

'But the biggest surprise was Charlie Pickles. The scowly subeditor took me into his bony arms and actually hugged me, saying, "Ahm goon' to miss thee, Stewart." It was a moment that I can characterise as... intimate.' 🤣🤣🤣

Whenever I read older books, and books such as this one remembering stuff from a long time ago, there are moments such as Charlie's reaction to 'intimate' that reminds me that pearl clutching isn't an entirely new thing. Did Charlie understand the word 'intimate'? 🤣

I didn't take him as one that believes in spirits! But I am admittedly a believer too (had some bizarre experiences I still avoid thinking about because they're distressing), so I am looking forward to reaching the parts that he foreshadows here (more ghost stories, haha).

Had to pause on this page for a minute to look up the painting he's talking about ("The Man with the Golden Helmet") 👀
